 There is no doubt that fashion industry in Nigeria has come of age  and indeed, Nigeria’s textile prints have made many heavy statements in the global fashion industry. Today, hundreds of young Nigerian textile designers are making the country proud at home and abroad.  One talented young Nigerian lady who is blazing the trail in the world of  fine arts and textile print design  is Aderonke Jaiyeola, the Chief Executive Officer of Mimiremi Creations in  Lagos Nigeria. She is one exceptional and talented industry player with eclectic talents in fine arts, creative ability in textile print design and flawless passion for colour and illustration with which she transforms any material into original and beautiful fashion pieces.

The talented and young Aderonke Jaiyeola is a first degree holder in Fine Arts from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife in Osun State and has a master in Visual Arts from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. The entrepreneurial spirit in her distinguished her for a Goldman Sachs 10,000 women scholar at Enterprise Development Centre of the Pan Atlantic University, Lagos, Nigeria from where she sharpened her business skills in Entrepreneurial Management. Her fine arts talent is hereditary in nature. This is because her dad is a cerebral fine artist, who lectures in one of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. It was from watching her dad as a kid that she developed great interest in fine arts and later pursued a degree course in Fine Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State Nigeria. “ As a kid,  in my house, I watched my dad paint, draw, mix colours and mentor his students , he would do all these flawlessly, it was fun, beautiful and I grew up loving the world of fine arts” said Aderonke.

When I asked her the story of how Mimiremi Creations metamorphosed, she replied, “Mimiremi Creations started as a hobby in 2010 after 3 years of working in the fashion industry. I later launched out with services ranging from textile print designs to artistic easy to wear clothing's with a touch of African flavour, handcrafted specially for women of all ages. It’s been five years of committed entrepreneurship and total dedication to the world of arts and fashion.  Today, Mimiremi Creations as a brand also has a design academy where intending designers and sewing enthusiasts are trained on the rudiments of sewing and fashion, to advanced classes of pattern drafting and fashion illustration. We also have weekly seminar series on Thursdays, where people are taught; Tie & Dye, Fabric painting, Batik designs, Textile design, hand Embroidery and weaving and so much more. Our graduates from the academy are doing so well!”

 A Mimiremi creation is a fashion label creatively directed by Aderonke with vast collection of fashion pieces with sweet ensemble in terms of style, personality, effect. Each piece in Mimiremi Creations’ store is classic, chic, retro, Afrocentric and ethnic fusion all at the same time and it cuts across different styles and trends. Her Lekki store has various unique African print fashion pieces for every fashion savvy lady.

Within her five years of being in fashion business, Aderonke has been consulted by top designers in Nigeria. Among such top designers that Mimiremi has worked on their textile prints includes Tiffany Amber Nigeria, a leading fashion design brand for the 2012 Mercedes Benz fashion week in New York.  Her works have brought numerous honours, awards and recognitions some of these include Obafemi Awolowo University best graduating textile design student (2006), 1st prize, National Student Fashion Design Competition, Best Textile Design, 2014 GTBank Lagos Fashion Design Week etc.

When asked the challenges she has faced in business. Aderonke replied “the challenges every entrepreneur in our country face are plethora, the challenge of erratic electricity, access to funds, bad roads and of course, the challenge of starting from level zero without any tangible support from the government. But as a committed entrepreneur, one has to face these challenges, surmount them and create a niche through originality and creativity. It could be challenging at first but entrepreneurship is the way to go!” Indeed, Mimiremi Creations is a ship that has set sail and it is moving with purpose towards its ambitious objectives…let Mimiremi take you on a fashion and art journey into the depths of many quality and original textile print designs as we approach Christmas!
